I managed to peel myself away from web development work and head for Radnor Lake; hit the trails around 6:30.  It was a very pleasant hike. I parked at Granny White, walked up the road, and hit the South Cove Loop trail at a respectable pace.

I just about stumbled over one of five deer hanging out on the trail

When I neared the top, I just about stumbled over one of five deer hanging out on/near the trail; my head was down, and I was listening intently to my iPod when I came up on them so suddenly.

I thought I might not have time to do the proper 4.5-mi. loop due to the encroachment of darkness, and neither did the park ranger I spoke with.  He was the bald guy with the gray mustache; did not get a name.  [I have just been told via instant message that this ranger's name is Randy Hedgepath.  Thanks, Kelly! *]  He had a scope set up on the “road between the lakes” and was encouraging passers-by to get an up-close and personal view of a great blue heron and a group of wood ducks.

So, I turned around and retraced my steps on the South Cove Loop. I humped it and made great time.  The deer count closed at 17. — and this would have been a record, had I not doubled back and therefore muddled the count (counted several deer twice).

Note to self: Gum still stuck on tree from two weeks ago.

* I can’t believe I fell for that name; it’s obviously made up.  Come on – a park ranger named Hedgepath? Good one, Kelly!
